Superfoods: Are they part of your diet?
by Chantal-Marie Stark
There has been much talk, debate, and research over the last few years about the importance of a select group of foods, which contain essential nutrients. These foods have come to be known as "superfoods". What are these "superfoods" and why do we need them? Is your diet deficient without them and what can you do about it?
Researchers have identified a special group of foods that provide enhanced nutrition to our bodies over other foods, which helps it to remain healthy and function properly. These foods have been labeled as "superfoods". Superfoods supply highly concentrated levels of nutrients and remarkable energy to each cell of our bodies. The reason these foods are "superfoods" is because they contain essential nutrients, like amino acids and fats, vitamins, enzymes, coenzymes, minerals, plant hormones, lignans, and phytonutrients, which our bodies require to stay healthy.
Superfoods are naturally grown and generally organic; they can be used as nutraceuticals, supplements, and food fortifiers. Herbalists, nutritionists, and homeopaths generally encourage patients to eat superfoods to help prevent specific diseases, improve their health and overall well-being. By adding superfoods to your diet, you can provide your body with extra vitamins, minerals, protein, essential fatty acids, fiber, and powerful antioxidants, which today's unbalanced North American diets are frequently deficient in. Superfoods have been proven to help improve the immune system, aid in weight management, stabilize blood glucose levels, improve cardiovascular and bowel health, help detoxify the body, fight aging, and prevent other diseases such as cancer.
The traditional North American diet has seen a decrease of these essential foods over the years. Our busy lives sway us to prepare nutritionally empty "convenience foods" and eat-out frequently, because it is quick and easy. Moreover, essential nutrients that are found in "superfoods" are in their highest concentration in their raw or least processed state. The less you cook these foods, the more nutrients are retained. For a more detailed list of superfoods and how they can help you, refer to the list below.
There are several foods that are bodies require on a daily basis, so they can function properly, and to maintain our health. Our time deprived lives tend to leave nutrition on the back burner.
